There are many ways to color in black and white pictures and I will explain them to you.

Curve Adjustment Layer Warning colors the whole photo!

Basically, if your photo is dark, click the new adjustment layer and change it around.

Gradient Map Toning Warning colors the whole photo!

Basically, make a new layer above your photo and change the blending options to what works with you.

Hue/Saturation Toning Warning colors the whole photo!

This is the most common way of toning. Though, it colors the whole photo.

Split-Toning With Color Balance

This is used to allow you tone the shadow, midtone, and highlight areas seperatly.

Selective Coloring This is what I use and it colors what you want to color

This is used by taking your lasso tool and lassoing what you want colored and make a new layer to fill with a solid color or a gradient map. This is what I do to color in my photos.
